In 2006 the beach facing rooms were extensively upgraded and now have air conditioners, bathrooms have been tiled and many of the fittings and furnishings replaced. A small swimming pool is set between the bar/dining area and the beach. |
Arabian Nights Hotel Directly on the beach Arabian Nights opened in 2006 and has had consistently good reports from people who have stayed as it offers very good value for money given the high standard of rooms and their cleanliness. Facilities - There is a semi-enclosed restaurant which serves traditional Zanzibar food as well as international cuisine. | Unguja Resort This small, superior hotel opened late in 2006. It is not a “resort” at all. We tried to persuade Ralph & Elies Kruidering to call it a “lodge”. However, “lodge” in their homeland of Holland describes a low budget establishment, which Unguja certainly is not. With their three children, they and business partner Frans Fiegge moved to Zanzibar to develop a hotel to meet the needs of people looking for a real Zanzibar experience, comfort, relaxation, personal service and rewarding snorkelling& diving. |
Location - Adjacent to the village of Kizimkazi on the southern tip of Zanzibar just over an hours drive from Stone Town and the Airport. It is very favourably located for swimming even at low tide as here the reef is close to shore so the tide does not recede as far as it does on other parts of Zanzibar. It is also located close to the dolphin viewing area. Accommodation - There are just 10 villas built in a circular shape well separated from each other in extensive tropical gardens. All have a spacious bedroom with fan, mosquito net, safe and two wash basins. In the View Villas there are spacious bathrooms (shower, toilet and wash basin), overlooking the ocean. Also on the ground floor there is a “baraza” style lounge/sitting area. Each villa has an upstairs “lounge” area which can also sleep 2 additional people. Whilst the rooms have similar dimensions, some specifications differ according to their location within the gardens. The Baobab Suites which do not have sea views from downstairs (they do from the upper area) have a plunge pool on the verandah and are airconditioned. Sea View Villas & Villas are closer to the sea and have direct ocean views. Facilities - There is a swimming pool and a separate restaurant with bar area which extends on to a timber decking area. There is an on-site dive centre and Ralph & Elies are both PADI qualified dive masters. A purpose built dhow was built to their specification to serve as a dive boat and also takes people wanting to snorkel in deeper waters. At reception there is internet access and a telephone service. A range of excursions can be arranged. |
Hakuna Majiwe Lodge Hakuna Majiwe Lodge is owned and managed by Claudio and Margherita. The Lodge provides upper mid-range accommodation with direct beach access. Though it has been open since 2004 we only visited in late November 2005 and were very favourably impressed. It has more style than most other establishments on this stretch of coast. |
Location - In the large fishing village of Paje approximately 45 minutes from the Airport and Stone Town on a good road. Accommodation - There are 20 rooms in cottages which each have 2 rooms. Rooms are a generous size, each with the ability to take an extra bed with ease. They are all en-suite and individually furnished, have ceiling fans and each has its own verandah looking over the gardens to the beach and ocean beyond. Claudio has taken care to use indigenous materials in the rooms with timber floors and hand-carved traditional Zanzibari beds, dark wood furnishings against pastel coloured walls. Facilities - There is a large open-plan bar, lounge and dining area and the restaurant offers local and international cuisine. The Lodge can arrange a number of excursions including snorkelling and diving off the reef, dhow sailing and deep sea fishing. There is a boutique shop as well as a tailors shop where a range of clothing, etc can be made for guests within hours. A 4 hand massage service can be booked at the boutique. The Lodge has one of the largest swimming pools on the island and with limited guest numbers the pool and sunbathing area are never crowded. |
Villa Kikadini Villa Kikadini is unique on Zanzibar offering accommodation of the very highest standard for up to 6 people. The Villa is let exclusively to a family, small group or honeymoon couple who want to be pampered in luxurious surroundings. It is breathtaking in its design, spaciousness, fittings, furniture and personal attention to guests. |
Location - In the large and interesting village of Jambiani approximately 1.5 hours drive from Stone Town and the airport. Accommodation - There are 2 very large en-suite bedrooms at the front of the house looking over the gardens and out to the beach. Leading off the central courtyard there is another smaller bedroom with a separate shower/toilet room. The rooms, and the whole Villa, are furnished with a mixture of Zanzibari and North African furniture imported from Morocco. Accommodation can be on a flexible basis, bed & breakfast, half or full board. Guests can make a booking on bed & breakfast and can choose each day if they want to eat at nearby restaurants or (with a minimum of 24 hours notice) have meals lovingly and imaginatively prepared by Joseph. Facilities - Villa Kikadini is about relaxation. On the first floor there is an expansive open plan terrace with luxurious arm chairs and a variety of loungers. The terrace has wonderful views over the beach and ocean beyond. In the central courtyard on the ground floor there are more chairs and loungers and in the front garden there is a traditional Zanzibari bed for those wanting to snooze in the sunshine. Meals can be taken in a number of locations in the Villa, the terrace, the courtyard or the gardens. Sylvia Barner, the owner/manager (from Norway) can arrange a variety of excursions/activities. A “must” is a guided tour of Jambiani to learn about the village, its history, its people and how they earn their living. |
Villa Bahati This “guesthouse” is an oasis with facilities and standard of service far superior to anything else of a similar price range on the south east coast. Rooms are rented on an individual basis or the whole villa can be rented by a group of up to 10 people. |
Location - In the large and interesting village of Jambiani approximately 1.5 hours drive from Stone Town and the airport.
Accommodation - There are 5 comfortable, individually and tastefully furnished en-suite rooms. The rooms are located off a central courtyard with 2 rooms at the front having views over the garden and out towards to the beach. Some rooms are quite compact; all have ceiling fans. Facilities - Villa Bahati, like Villa Kikadini next door, is about relaxation. The large terrace on the first floor has a number of easy chairs and loungers for day time and evening relaxation. The terrace is open on all sides and has views over the beach and ocean; the bar and dining area is also located on the terrace. The outstanding feature of Villa Bahati are the staff and the service they provide. Sylvia Barner manages the small hotel, and her enthusiasm about what they have at “VB” is truly justified. She has trained a team of just 6 staff who take real and genuine care of guests. Within a day you will get to know them all by name and, similarly, they will not only know you by name but will know your likes, dislikes, preferences for food and drink, etc. Sylvia and her staff can arrange a wide range of excursions. |
