Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel Is the only first grade hotel at the north of the island. It looks out over the pristine beach and sand banks at low tide. The Hotel buildings are from local material with palm thatched roofs. There is an atmosphere of calm and tranquility in Colonial style surroundings. |
Location - Approximately 3 Kms from the interesting fishing village of Nungwi and 1.5 hours drive from Stone Town. The walk along the beach at low tide to Nungwi village is pleasant, but beware that at high tide the route along the beach is not accessible. Accommodation - The 32 rooms have recently been upgraded and all now have air conditioning, are en-suite and very comfortably furnished. There are the Lodge Rooms at the rear of the site which have views over the gardens; the Superior Chalet Rooms with two rooms and verandahs overlooking the ocean; the Superior Deluxe Chalet Rooms which are furnished to a very high standard and have uninterrupted views over the beach and ocean beyond and finally the newly built Ocean Suite which provides undiluted luxury including a living room leading on to a private terrace with a plunge pool. Facilities - Public areas, including the restaurant and two bars are spacious and airy, furnished with a Colonial and sedate feel. It has a swimming pool & dive centre which organises scuba diving, snorkelling and other water sports; the hotel arranges game fishing with a well equipped boat. There is a well equipped shop selling clothing and souvenirs. |
Flame Tree Cottages This gem of individually designed guest cottages, opened in mid 2004, is owned and managed by Seif and Elizabeth Miskry (Zanzibari/Scottish couple) who are perfect hosts and are well supported by their obliging staff. |
Location - This tasteful development is on the edge of the large fishing village of Nungwi in the spacious gardens (which lead to the beach) of the owner's house. Accommodation - There are 10 en-suite rooms which offer the highest standard of all establishments at Nungwi village. Some rooms have direct sea views, others have sea views from their spacious verandahs. The generous sized rooms are pristine, with white tiled floors, traditional furnishings, mosquito nets, built-in wardrobes and are air conditioned. Rooms have access to small fitted kitchens with refrigerator; some rooms have a separate sitting area. One cottage is ideal for a family, or small group, as it has 2 separate bedrooms with a common sitting room/kitchenette. Facilities - At the moment breakfast is served on the verandah of guests' rooms, but a small dining area is planned where breakfast and snacks will be served. Small group dinners can be cooked to order with a days notice; Elizabeth's grilled Kingfish must be one of the best meals I have had on the island. Flame Tree is close enough to several bars/restaurants to take advantage of what these offer, yet you can retreat to the peace and quiet of the Cottages. Seif & Elizabeth have their own mashua (small local dhow) and organise snorkelling trips with picnic lunch to Mnemba Atoll and Kendwa, deep sea fishing, line fishing and the ever popular sunset sail. Scuba diving can be arranged with Diving and water sports Centres just 3 minutes walk away. |
Nungwi Village Beach Resort Is a mid-range hotel adjacent to Nungwi village. It is the best of the larger hotels on this popular stretch of beach. Locally owned and managed, so there may be some hitches with the service, but the staff are friendly and helpful. |
Location - Adjacent to the fishing village of Nungwi on one side and a number of guest houses on the other - yet sufficiently separate from them so they are not intrusive. Accommodation - There are two grades of rooms; the best, Superior Sea Facing Rooms are large and well furnished with evening views of the spectacular sunsets. All rooms are en-suite and air conditioned. Facilities - The restaurant and bar are at the front of the Hotel almost on the beach. Meals are acceptable. There are two dive centres within 5 minutes walk. Among the many guest houses nearby there are a choice of bars and places to eat. There are a couple of shops in Nungwi village, but stocks are limited and check sell-by dates. |
| Smiles Hotel Is a smart mid-range hotel which is locally owned and managed. When we visited alcohol was not served, but there are plenty of bars and restaurants nearby. |
Location - Between Nungwi Village Beach Resort and Flame Tree Cottages right on the sea front adjacent to the village of Nungwi. Accommodation - There are four two story buildings each with 4 rooms giving a total of 16 rooms. They are extremely clean with en-suite facilities, are air conditioned and have TV. Mosquito nets are usually in good order. There is a mix of double, triple and honeymoon rooms. Each room has a sea facing balconies. Facilities - are limited, though there is a restaurant which serves simple but acceptable food. There are sun loungers near the beach and the palm trees provide shade from the mid-day sun. There are two dive centres within 5 minutes walk to Smiles. |
| Langi Langi Beach Bungalows A relatively new hotel and one of the better budget style hotels on this part of the Nungwi peninsular. |
Location - Adjacent to the fishing village of Nungwi and guest houses on the other side. Regrettably the Hotel does not have beach frontage, but there is a lawn and the beach is just a short walk over the road. Accommodation - 14 air conditioned en-suite rooms which represent good value for money. Though slightly spartan in furnishings, the rooms are clean and well maintained. Facilities - There is a restaurant which serves a limited range of meals. It is adjacent to lively restaurants and bars with live music on some evenings. There is a dive centre close to the hotel. |
Mnemba Island This beautiful little private island off the northeast coast of Zanzibar is one of the world's finest beach retreats. Stylish, understated, discreet and reassuringly expensive. The coral reef that circles the island is one of the finest in the Indian Ocean. |
Location - Mnemba Island is one of the ultimate coral island paradises. This tiny island, located in the lagoon off the East Coast of Zanzibar provides "barefoot luxury" to the highest standards and is widely considered to be one of the finest and most exclusive beach locations in the world. The island itself is surrounded by a coral atoll which offers the best snorkelling and diving in Zanzibar. It is also one of the few locations on this coast where turtles continue to nest undisturbed. Accommodation - There are ten rooms, for a maximum of twenty guests, widely spaced along the arc of the western beach. The structures are all made from natural materials with the characteristic Zanzibar 'makuti' (palm thatch matting) on every surface giving a really soft and organic feel to the place. If only everyone building beach accommodation in Zanzibar had this same eye for style and detail. Inside there are no windows or doors, just palm-thatch blinds for privacy. Wonderful double beds have huge mosquito nets, even though Mnemba is certified to be malaria free. The beds can be made up as doubles or twins. All you have to do is lie back and listen to the surf. The bathrooms are very simple. Facilities - With so few guests on the island, setting out a plan for each day is very much a process of having a natter with Geoff over a drink. Obviously the diet is orientated towards the sea, with the local fishermen bringing in their catches to sell on the beach. Meals are the main events and on some nights a table is laid out on the beach and the chefs cook a barbeque on the sand. The staff here are really cool and this is certainly the best beach barbeque we've ever been to. A truly memorable experience. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are included in the room rate, except for champagnes, cognacs, premium brand spirits, cellar wines and tobacco. |

Kendwa Rocks Kendwa Rocks is a cool, locally-owned guesthouse on a very beautiful beach, offering a reasonable level of accommodation to people who are laid-back enough to not worry about the rather variable levels of service. |
If you too are the kind of laid back person who doesn't mind whether the maid comes today or tomorrow, or if the dinner comes now or in an hour or more ... if you are this chilled out, then you will absolutely love this place. If you are anything other, then there is a fair chance that Kendwa Rocks will drive you crazy, which means that you will then upset the karma for all the other dudes, so don't stay here. Actually this is pretty true of the whole of Kendwa... this place sucks up time like a sponge. Most of our guests staying at Kendwa Rocks will mix it up with other guesthouses around the islands and in Stonetown. This is a difficult place to recommend because it is so unreliable, but it is also very cool. We have known lots of people who think this is the best place on the islands... it can certainly lay claim to being on the best swimming beach. There are six nice bungalows are set in a single line above the beach and a further seven down on the beach itself. These latter rooms on the beach do get very hot and sauna like and so we tend to recommend the original six rooms "on the rocks". Most rooms are fitted with Zanzibarian beds and some nice little touches of decor, which may not add up to much, but make a change from the usual bland guesthouse 'cells'. Rooms do have fans fitted, but they may not work when you need them most due to the generator not running at night... there's no choice but to sweat it out. |
Amaan Bungalows Amaan is really the centre of the whole West Nungwi strip and Fat Fish bar, with its thumping music and jetty seating area is pretty cool. The dive base here is also pretty good. |
The place is run by a German couple and is tidy and organised (which really is saying something in Zanzibar), although with more bungalows than anywhere else it does lack a little intimacy. A range of bungalows set amongst a nice mature garden of bougainvillea, with local rustic furniture, good nets & fans. The Lionfish Restaurant overlooks the beach at the front of the property. Breakfast is served 7.30 to 11.00, lunch 12.30 to 14.30 and dinner 18.30 to 21.00. The Fat Fish Bar is ceratinly the loudest bar around, full of locals and divers mixing freely. A very cool mangrove pole terrace juts out over the beach from the rocks and gives a great view. Serving meals, snacks and drinks. |
